Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
